Visiting a Friend in the Mountains

I had already heard that wall stickers are really hip now and found the trend - well, a trend...
But that was before I knew the beautiful murals from Surface View. Above all, I am taken by the pictured one, an extract from ancient Chinese wall hanging dating back to the Ming Dynasty. But there are many more great motives. Gorgeous!

Traumhaft!

England's Pleasant Pastures

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England’s mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England’s pleasant pastures seen?
These lines came to my mind when I visited the Cotswolds three weeks ago (unexpectedly). I had often heard that this region is supposed to be one of the most beautiful of England but would never have thought how true this is! This post is therefore dedicated to the beauty of nature and the timeless buildings that add to the impressing overall picture.

Jeves and Wooster

The humour of the ITV series Jeeves and Wooster may not be everybody's cup ot tea - even I as a fan find it sometimes a little bit too slapstick. Or as the British Sitcom Guide puts it:
"The third and fourth series exhibit a marked decline in quality, with frequent descents into the cartoonish. However, the Wodehousian plots and the interplay between Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry still manage to keep the program from sinking utterly into mediocrity. Compared to the heights of the first two series, series three and four are fairly poor efforts, but they still shine compared to most of what's on television."
The most remarkable thing is the decor, though. The show is set in the 1930s, and the costumes, the buildings, the furniture - everything looks totally contemporary. Art déco at its best, which is already visible in the beautiful opening credits.
I wish I could be as impeccably dressed as Bertie Wooster every day - but I suppose you need to have a valet like Jeeves for that...
***

Disch House

The Disch House in Cologne was built between 1928 and 1930 as an "infinite curve" on a tightly dimensioned corner lot in a back then high-density city quarter. Today it contains a department store whose high quality goods are mostly as stylish as this beautiful building.

Detect the Elegance

"My ambition: never copy. Create a new style, bright blazing colours, and detect the elegance in your models."

Tamara de Lempicka, born 1898 in Warsaw, was one of the most famous Art Déco Painter and "the first woman artist to be a glamour star." Her life and works are the epitome of everything I love about the Roaring Twenties - coolness, style, savoir vivre, glamour, beauty, modernity, onset into a new era, the spirit of a new age. Thanks to the virtual world her complete works can now be admired online!

Class society

Of course there is no waiting room class distinction at German rail stations any more. Maybe it's because there are no waiting rooms at all any more. The interior of the Oldenburg main station not only still shows the sign but also breathes the spirit and the style of bygone times when this distinction was normal, though.
***

Gerling Quarter

On May 4th, Robert Gerling established the insurance company Vermittlungsgesellschaft Bureau für Versicherungswesen Robert Gerling Co.mbH in Cologne, the germ cell of the international Gerling insurance group. In the following years the company grew, more and more premises were built in the surrounding Friesenviertel that eventually became a quarter of its own, rife with beautiful buildings from nearly every decade of the 20th century.
I had the great joy to work in these buildings for more than ten years. And even though the future development seems to be classy, too, I miss these wonderful ambience nearly as much as I miss Cologne...

Barcelona Pavilion

Although there is a plethora of wonderful buildigs in Barcelona, Mies van der Rohe's German Pavilion of the 1929 International Exhibition is my favourite. Classic modernity and simple yet extravagant beauty - the building spreads a stylish coolness that in my opinion epitomizes the air of the 1920s.

Fabian

Fabian - The Story of a Moralis by the German author Erich Kästner is one of my favourite books. The novel is set in the Berlin of the early 1930s. Jakob Fabian, unemployed advertiser, is roaming the city and studying life: boarding rooms, bars, certain ladies and respective establishments, jobless people, love and the mendacity of mankind. In the turbid stream of opportunism and inhumanity, the moralist perishes - and with him the ideals of the Weimar Republic. A brilliant and provocative urban satire which gives a splendid insight into the spirit of an dying era.

No, this is not a vintage poster from the 1920s - it's a flyer from the Seattle band C'est la Mort. I do not know where these guys always get such beautiful images, but I love them. There's good music (although maybe not everybody's cup of tea) and some extremly nice people in the band, too! They play in the Seattle area quite often - if only Washington state wouldn't be so far away from my home...

On April 14th 1912 - the day the Titanic sank - the 27 km long railway line from Palma de Mallorca to Sóller was opened. On July 14th 1929 it was electrified. Today the line is still run with rumbling carriages and cars originating from the early 20th century - less as a modern means of mass transportation but more as tourist attraction. Nevertheless a still stylish way to cross the island which is quite an experience!

Easy Virtue

"The twenties have roared... the thirties have yet to swing" - this tagline was enough to lure me into the (kindly air conditioned) cinema despite the current tropical temperatures. Splendid actors, great setting, witty dialogues and a non-Hollywood but nevertheless somewhow happy ending - an enjoyable film!
***

Bahlsen Beauty

Hermann Bahlsen (1859–1919) worked as a sugar merchant in Great Britain where he became acquainted with English Cakes. In 1899 he founded the Hannoversche Cakesfabrik. In 1911 the company buildt new premises in Hanover-List (not far from my dwelling). Today they are the most outstanding examples of Jugendstil architecture in the city. Last year's European Heritage Day gave me the rare possibility to visit the building and take some pictures. It's a real beauty!

The Birth of Art Déco

I had never heard of George Barbier before I accidentally came across a postcard with this motive when I passed by a shop. What a wonderful artist, what beautiful images, what a discovery! I'm a fan now...

Members Only

I really like the concept and the style of the new Soho House Berlin - but I do not at all agree to its owners, that suits would "ruin the ambience", as it is quoted in the recent German AD issue. Whence this suit hostility? A suit equals not necesserily conservatism.
But what I second is another sentence: "As soon as you want to be cool, you aren't. Then you can leave it at all."
***

Rocking Chair

Beautiful, cool and cosy - this chair rocks (in either way)!

Portrait of a Lady

I came across this portrait in the wonderful two volume work Fashion from Taschen Books. It shows Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867–1944), and his wife, Edith Minturn Stokes (1867–1937). I was captured immediatley by the lady's smile, her glance, her posture, her entire appearance. She seems so vivid, self-assured and likeable - I would have loved to meet her in person.
Unfortunately, not much can be found about Ms. Minturn Stokes in the web (apart from this portrait). She married her husband in 1895 and according to a report in the New York Times it was a rather plain wedding with a bride "widely known for her beauty".
The slightly grim but also good looking groom, eldest son of multimillionaire Anson Phelps Stokes, worked as an architect and is the author of The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909, which seems to be an impressing work.
What a stylish couple!
